Course-Related Instruction in Library Use

Classes

Upon request, subject specialist librarians will plan sessions on various aspects of library and information use.  Classes may meet in the Electronic Resource Center on M-Level of Eisenhower Library, in your regular classroom, or elsewhere depending on space needs and availability.  Topics covered in a library session are determined in consultation with the course instructor and might include, for example:

  • Identifying and refining a research topic
  • Understanding the characteristics of scholarly literature vs. popular vs. trade publications in a field
  • Understanding the concept of primary vs. secondary sources in your field
  • Introduction to specific information resources such as library catalogs or bibliographic databases relevant to an area of study
  • Evaluating information resources (especially on the Internet) for quality and appropriateness to one's purpose

Please plan to give the librarian at least one week's notice when requesting a class in order to allow sufficient preparation time and to ensure room availability.

Online Resources

Librarians can also create Web pages tailored to the needs of students in a particular course or work with faculty to incorporate links to relevant information resources into their course Web sites, as well as provide other materials to assist students in information seeking and use.

Contact your liaison librarian to discuss options for instruction in library and information use.
