The JHU Libraries Catalog includes holdings for all the JHU Libraries, including the Welch Medical Library, the Friedheim Library of the Peabody Conservatory, and of course, the Sheridan Libraries. If an item you want is not at the Eisenhower Library, simply use the blue request button in the catalog record to request that the book be sent to you at the Eisenhower Library.
Searching the catalog:
The catalog offers you three ways to search: Alphabetical, Basic Keyword, and Advanced Keyword. Each search has its pros and cons.
Alphabetical: Use the Alphabetical search when you know the author, title, or subject. This is a browse search so it looks for the beginnings of authors' names, title words, etc. Alphabetical subject searches have to be constructed properly to return results, for example the correct way to search for discrimination in education in the United States is is "discrimination in education--united states." You must use the two dashes without spaces.
Basic Keyword: Use this search for more flexible searching. Author, title, and subject words do not need to be in exact order and you get a general keyword search field here for more options. You can also do a combined search here for a title by a specific author.
Advanced Keyword: Use this search for the most control over your search. In addition to combining author, title, and subject searches, you can also limit by location (i.e., Eisenhower only), language, and material type.
Other tips on finding books
Your results will be sorted in reverse chronological order, meaning the newest books will be at the top of your results list, which is a good way to determine if you're getting the most current research.
The catalog record has useful information. It will often include the table of contents for a book and if it has a bibliography. Check the publisher's name too as university presses publish reputable books. Sage, Blackwell, and Routledge are also well-known publishers of sociology titles.
Updated daily, this catalog includes all types of materials cataloged by libraries that contribute their records to OCLC. The catalog includes more than 52 million records representing 400 languages. OCLC is a nonprofit membership organization serving 43,559 libraries in 86 countries around the world. JHU patrons can use the ILL button in these catalog records to directly place an Interlibrary Loan request.
