Using Electronic Indexes

 Library catalogs do not help the researcher find individual articles on a topic. In order to find journal articles, you must use an index.  Finding articles on your topic often is a 2-step process.
 
   - First you locate citations for articles in an index. This involves identifying the title, author, and date of the article. And most important, the name of the journal where it appears.
 
   - Then you must find out if the library owns the journal. Eisenhower Library subscribes to over 12,000 journals, but it does not subscribe to ALL the journals indexed in any one index.

   - If the library has an electronic subscription to the journal it may link from both indexing database and catalog.
 

 Where do you begin?
 
     * Select an appropriate database from the subject page or list of database   

     * Learn to use its commands and indexing terms

     * Use on-screen help, or the Help screens. Read any instructions, and follow the examples of sample searches provided for you.

     * Librarians are trained to use databases. Go to the Research
     Consultation Office for help. Or go to your Librarian.
