Romanization of Hebrew and Yiddish

The Library of Congress Tables of Romanization of Hebrew and Yiddish

Journal Supplements - Many articles in Near Eastern Studies appear in journal supplements and other hard to find serial publications:

Journal title search - almost any serial with a continuous volume numeration (e.g., Vicino oriente or Aula orientalis) can be found with this type of alphabetical search.

Supplement to a journal - most of these supplements can be located with a series search (e.g., Series title: Aula orientalis supplementa). A journal title search only will yield the order record for the supplement.

Analyzed series (or Analytic) - a series of monographs with separate
records in the library catalog but shelved under a single call number
 location (e.g., Studi e testi = AS221 .V34).

German learned societies frequently publish Analyzed series (e.g.,  Abhandlungen der Bayerische Akademie der Wissenschaften). These may be
subdivided by disciplinary "class" (e.g., Philosophisch-historische Klasse). Some  are treated as serials, with no separate records for component
volumes; others have records for individual volumes; some were treated
as serials to a certain date and are analyzed thereafter.

Always look under both individual items and series titles; for example,
some works of Mariano San Nicolo have individual records while others are
found only under the title of a series from one or another of the German
learned societies (e.g., Series title: Münchener Beiträge zur Papyrusforschung   und antiken Rechtsgeschichte. ).

Series title search - books or monographs published as a numbered series or as a supplement to a journal may be easiest to locate with a series search (e.g., Series title: Aula orientalis supplementa). An ordinary Title search may yield only the subscription record ["on order"].

Volume in series - some titles in series have their own holdings information but no detailed record of their place in the larger series (e.g., Title: Giza: Bericht uber die von der Akademie der Wissenschaften in Wien has it own volume numbers but not the exact numbers in the series Denkschriften Osterreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften, Philosophisch-Historische Klasse).

There is no easy way to equate a volume in the title with the volumes in the larger series, but note that the library catalog gives the right series number for the first volume in the set.

Corporate author - some publications may be listed under the publishing
organization & searched under the organization as author (e.g., Author:
 American Oriental Society).

Sets classed together - some publications consist of individual
contributions cataloged only under their group title (e.g., Title: Discoveries in   the Judaean desert).  For individual components, search only under Keyword All Fields (e.g., damascus baumgarten).

Collected essays - individual articles in these collections search best as
Keyword All Fields combinations (e.g., fales tablets) for an article in
Essays in Syria in the Iron Age).

Geographic names as subjects - Frequently these are under the modern form of the name, not under the name best know to scholars [e.g., Giza is under Jizah (Egypt)].
