The JHU Libraries Catalog

What Is It?

The JHU Libraries Catalog contains records for all JHU Libraries. It lists all the full-length resources (books, videos, recordings, computer files, microforms, etc) owned by the Libraries. Contents of journals are not listed. Tables of Contents of some books are listed.

Why Use It?

The JHU Libraries Catalog answers the questions: What is owned by these libraries and where is it?

General Catalog Tips

- It is not necessary to capitalize proper names, title words, etc.

- It is not necessary to include punctuation, exception: the "--" in a Subject Browse search (for example: music--united states)

- Do not include articles (like a, an, the) at the beginning of a title (for example: bob dylan companion)

- Subject searching is not recommended unless you know the Library of Congress subject heading

- Avoid extremely common terms in keyword searches

Tips for Locating Books on Music:

The main Music collection is found on B-level at MSEL under the following
call number:  MThis is a small collection; the holdings of the Friedheim Library at the Peabody Conservatory are more extensive.

To find information about a composer  or performer:

 - Do a Subject Browse searching on last name and first name with a space after the last name (e.g., dylan, bob).

- Do a Keyword search on the composer's or the performer's name (format is not important (e.g., joan baez).

 - Do a an Advanced Keyword search on composer and specific work (e.g.,  dylan and lyrics)

For books on a musical movement or genre try a Subject search (e.g., protest songs). You can add the country name (e.g., protest songs--united states).  Be sure to include the 2 dashes.
