| National Endowment for the Humanities | The NEH is an independent federal agency created in 1965. It is the largest funder of humanities programs in the United States. | | Fulbright Scholar Program | The U.S. government's flagship academic exchange effort. Fulbright grants are made to U.S. citizens and nationals of other countries for a variety of educational activities, primarily university lecturing, advanced research, graduate study and teaching in elementary and secondary schools. Both U.S. and Visiting Fulbright Scholars lecture or conduct research in a wide variety of academic and professional fields ranging from journalism and urban planning to music, philosophy, business administration and zoology. | | American Council of Learned Societies | The ACLS invites research applications in all disciplines of the humanities. Scholars devote 6 to 12 months of fulltime research and writing. The ultimate goal of the project should be a major piece of scholarly work, a monograph or other equally substantial form of scholarship. | | National Humanities Center Fellowships | National Humanities Center offers 40 residential fellowships for advanced study in the humanities during the academic year, September 2007 through May 2008. Applicants must hold doctorate or equivalent scholarly credentials. Young scholars as well as senior scholars are encouraged to apply, but they must have a record of publication, and recent Ph.D.s should be aware that the Center does not support the revision of a doctoral dissertation. Scholars from any nation may apply. | | Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars | The Center awards approximately 20-25 residential fellowships annually to individuals with outstanding project proposals in a broad range of the social sciences and humanities on national and/or international issues. Topics and scholarship should relate to key public policy challenges or provide the historical and/or cultural framework to illumine policy issues of contemporary importance. | | Guggenheim Memorial Foundation | The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation provides fellowships for advanced professionals in all fields (natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, creative arts) except the performing arts. | Andrew Mellon and ACLS Early Career Fellowships | Money for Dissertation Completion and Recent Doctoral Recipients | | Penn Humanities Forum | The Penn Humanities Forum awards five one-year Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowships each academic year to junior scholars in the humanities who are not yet tenured (may not be tenured during the fellowship year). The Fellowship carries an annual stipend of $42,000 plus health insurance, requires that the scholar spend the year in residence at the University of Pennsylvania, and is open to international applicants. | | Council on Library Resources (CLIR) : Mellon Fellowships for Dissertation Research in Original Sources | 10 competively awarded humanities fellowships, for work with original (primary) sources in institutions either in the US or abroad. For students working toward a dissertation | | Folger Shakespeare Library, Washington DC | The Folger Shakespeare Library offers research fellowships to encourage access to its exceptional collections and to encourage ongoing cross-disciplinary dialogue among scholars of the early modern period. | | John Kluge Center, Library of Congress | The Kluge Center especially encourages humanistic and social science research that makes use of the Library's large and varied collections. Interdisciplinary, cross-cultural, or multi-lingual research is particularly welcome. Scholars who have received a terminal advanced degree within the past seven years in the humanities, social sciences or in a professional field such as architecture or law are eligible. Applicants may be U.S. citizens or foreign nationals. | | Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowships | Provides three years of support for individuals engaged in graduate study leading to a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Made to individuals who have demonstrated superior academic achievement, are committed to a career in teaching and research, show promise of future achievement as scholars and teachers, and are well prepared to use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students. | | The Newberry Library, Chicago | Short-term fellowships and long-term fellowships available. Short-term fellowships are generally restricted to individuals from outside the metropolitan Chicago area and are primarily intended for researchers with a need to examine specific items in the Library's collection. Long-term fellowships are generally available without regard to an applicant's place of residence and are intended to support significant works of scholarship that draw on the Library's strengths.
| | Council on Library Resources: Post-Doc Fellowships | The program offers fellowships to individuals who have earned their Ph.D.s in disciplines in the humanities within the past five years (or who will earn them before starting the program) and who believe that there are opportunities to develop meaningful linkages between disciplinary scholarship, libraries, archives, and evolving digital tools. All fields in the humanities will be considered; Fellows must be in residence at a sponsoring institution for the duration of the fellowship.
