Many German universities now have "Dokumenten- und Publikationenserver" that include web versions of some of their dissertations as well as other Hochschulschriften. The various dissertation archives are listed centrally as Dissertationen Online. This is a large Web page with many links to German servers. Each one has to searched individually however.
The DDB OPAC also lists the dissertations that appear in Reihe H of the DNB, i.e.- virtually all postwar German dissertations. The Deutsche Bibliothek collects all dissertations and postdoctoral publications from German institutions of higher learning as well as dissertations and postdoctoral publications in German from institutions abroad, regardless of format. Two copies of the printed version or the online version are sent to The Deutsche Bibliothek and archived here.
A search for goethe diss yields 691 entries, since all Hochschulschriften seem to get the note diss in their record. Don't use the search category hss (Hochschulschrift) as this doesn't seem to have the desired result.

, from the Center for Research Libraries in Chicago. So far, 70,000 out of 750,000 are cataloged. The Center receives on deposit theses from a number of foreign universities and will also order on request titles that are not already held. The Center's Database provides access to records for some titles, but since many are still uncataloged, not finding a title does not indicate that it is not held at CRL.

Access to Dissertations
The Library does not purchase many dissertations from other institutions. However, many are available through InterLibrary Services. U.S. dissertations can often be borrowed from the institutions where they were written, or from another library that has purchaced a copy.
Remember that U.S. dissertations written since 1997 are available for free download from Digital Dissertations.
If you would like the Library to purchase a dissertation, contact the Librarian for the Department.
