Identifying a Topic

QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF:

  1. What do you already know about your subject?
    1. What aspects of this topic interest you?
    2. Where would you go to find out more?
  2. How long has your subject existed?  Is it a relatively new concept?
  3. What broad discipline does it fall into? (e.g., history, engineering, education, political science, medicine, health, literature, art, sociology, etc.).  Determining what subject area your topic falls in is the first step in eliminating the largest chunk of the library's collection.
  4. Are there other ways to describe your topic (synonyms and relationships)?
