Known items

If you know something about the item you're searching for (title, author, journal title, call number, subject, ISBN or ISSN) start with an ALPHABETICAL search.

When doing an AUTHOR SEARCH, use last name first:
Example:  nussbaum, martha

When doing a TITLE SEARCH, leave off initial articles such as a, an, the:
Example:  sound and the fury

If you're looking for an article for which you have a citation, do a JOURNAL/NEWSPAPER TITLE search for the journal title, not the article title.
Example:  journal of counseling and development

When you don't have a known item

When you don't have an exact author, title, subject, etc., or when you want to see all the items that include certain keywords, do a BASIC or ADVANCED keyword search (advanced gives you more options).

Example:  Sample keyword search in the JHU Libraries Catalog

Series

Single titles in a "series" can sometimes be difficult to find. A series is defined as a group of separate items related to one another by the fact that each item bears, in addition to its own title proper, a collective title applying to the group as a whole.

One example of a series is: Garland Reference Library of Social Science. Critical Education Practice. Two of the titles in this series are: Inner-City Schools, Multiculturalism, and Teacher Education: A Professional Journey (v. 8) and Examining Science Teaching in Elementary School from the Perspective of a Teacher and Learner (v. 18).  Both are part of the series but each has a distinct and separate title.

It is often necessary take several approaches to finding a series title based on the information you have about the title. If all else fails, ask at the Information Desk or ask your subject librarian if problems arise searching for series.

Examples

The name of the series is known: Garland Reference Library of Social Science. Critical Education Practice.

  1. From the JHU Libraries Catalog do an alphabetical search for a Series Title.
  2. In the search box enter "garland reference library of social science. critical education practice."
  3. Find the needed volume and view the entire record to find the holding information.

The name of an individual title is known but it is necessary to see the other titles in the series: Inner-City Schools, Multiculturalism, and Teacher Education: A Professional Journey. This title is part of the series Garland Reference Library of Social Science. Critical Education Practice. To find other titles in that series:

  1. From the JHU Libraries Catalog do an alphabetical Title search.
  2. In the search box enter "inner-city schools, multiculturalism."
  3. Choose the entry for the title and view the full record.
  4. Click on the hyperlink to Garland Reference Library of Social Science in the series field. JHU Libraries' holdings for the series will be displayed.
