How to Find Book Reviews


To find book reviews, you need the author and title of the book as well as the year of publication.  Generally, book reviews appear in the year or year after the book was published.  Not all books are reviewed and sometimes it takes a couple of years for a review to appear. 
Article and Full-text Databases

Online from 1989-. Multidisciplinary database covering scholarly and popular periodicals many with full text.

Online from 1920-. Lists books, articles, critical editions of literary works, book reviews, collections of essays, etc. published worldwide.

Online from 1980-. Citation index to over 1,300 Arts and Humanities journals.

Online from 1983-. Indexes over 100 periodicals published in the U.S., U.K., and Canada and reviews about 7000 books per year. Print version covers 1905-.

Includes information about books, audiovisual materials, lists of award winners, and publisher information as well as book reviews from Publishers Weekly, Kirkus Reviews, Library Journal and more.

Online from 1984-. Indexes 400 major journals in the Humanities. Full text coverage from 100 publications from 1/95.

Full-text, page-image archive of scholarly journals starting with volume one of each journals. Titles include Callaloo, MLN, Shakespeare Quarterly, and others.

Coverage varies, but typically includes the last 20 years. Useful for full-text film, book, and play reviews. Includes many U.S. and international newspapers as well as popular magazines. No images. Under "Guided News Search," select "Arts & Sports" from the first drop-down box.

Index to the contents of thousands of periodicals in the Humanities and Social Sciences from their first issues to 1995.

Access to over 100 full-text scholarly journals from JHU Press, Duke UP, Penn State and more.

Current index covers 1983 -. Indexes articles from popular periodicals in the U.S. and Canada.

Retrospective index covers 1890-1982.

Use the Following to find pre-1900 book reviews

Digitized images of the pages of American magazines and journals that originated between 1741 and 1900.

Full text, page image of historical newspapers including New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Wall street Journal, and Washington Post.

Premier index to nineteenth-century periodicals and includes Poole's Index to Periodical Literature (+ supplements), 1802-1906.

Publishes timely reviews of current scholarly work in the field of classical studies (including archaeology). Covers 1990-present.

Reviews books in the humanities and social sciences.  Covers 1993-present.

The Medieval Review

Publishes reviews of current work in all areas of Medieval Studies, a field it interprets as broadly as possible.  Covers 1993-present.

New York Review of Books

Currently not available.

Review of Biblical Literature

Founded by the Society of Biblical Literature, presents reviews of books in biblical studies and related fields.

Women's Review of Books

Provides indexing and some full text to printed resources (current issues in M-level Current Periodicals under HQ1101 .W365 until replaced with microfilm).
