This guide lists Web sites, reference tools, databases, and search strategies that will of use to students in Real French 211.420. Students are welcome to schedule an appointment for additional assistance with research for this class or for assistance with any of the resources referenced on this guide.


French Language Tools and French Culture in the Library
  • You will want to become very familiar with the "Blue Label" section on D Level that includes books and dictionaries on the French language.
  • French language books are in the PC section. Call Number range : PC 2001-3761
  • You will find lots of books on ARGOT (slang), as well as the official dictionary of the French language (in many editions).

Here are a few highlighted books:

Grand dictionnaire argot & français populaire : D Level Blue Labels PC 3741 .C66 2006

Dictionnaire de l'Académie française:
The 9th edition is in General Reference : PC 2625 .D455 2000
Online site for the latest edition.
Previous editions are on D Level in the same call number range.
Comp File 3350 : This CD-ROM includes all eight editions of the Dictionnaire, which can be searched in many ways, including by the dates of a word's appearance and disappearance in the language.

Find Books about Contemporary France and French

JHU Libraries Catalog

To search for books about France use the Alphabetical Search option and set the search box to Subjects -- Library of Congress. Try any or all of the following Subject Headings:

French language
French language--Slang
French language--History
French language--Idioms
French language--Spoken French
French language--Discourse analysis
Popular culture--France
France--Civilization--1945-
France--Intellectual life--21st century

Be sure to explore the other headings that come up with these searches.

You can search by Keyword as well. Try any combination, in French or English.
