Aids to Writing in French
  • You will want to become very familiar with the "Blue Label" section on D Level that includes books and dictionaries on the French language.
  • French language books are in the PC section. Call Number range : PC 2001-3761
  • You will find lots of dictionaries (including slang) of the French language, and grammars.

French-English dictionaries

  • Harrap's standard French and English dictionary. 4 volumes (vol. 1-2 French-English; vol. 3-4 English-French)
    Regarded as the most comprehensive and authoritative of its kind.
    General Reference:  PC 2640 .H3 1963 Quarto
  • Collins-Robert French-English / English-French dictionary.
    Probably the best single volume bilingual dictionary
    General Reference:  PC 2640 .C69 2003 (also a 1998 edition)
  • Lots of dictionaries on D Level in the Blue Labels to check out. PC 2640

French-French dictionaries

  • Grand Larousse de la langue française.  7 volumes.
    The vocabulary of 19th and 20th century French, with scientific and technical terms well-represented.
    General Reference:  PC 2625.G7 1971
  • Dictionnaire de la langue française. E. Littré. 7 volumes
    Emile Littré’s great dictionary, said to be the greatest ever complied by a single man. Modern French, from the 17th century on.
    General Reference :  PC 2625 .L6 1994 QUARTO
  • Trésor de la langue française informatisé
