Building stairsTips for finding journal and newspaper articles in the MSE Library on structures, structural engineers, and architects

For your final assignment you will need to look at your structure from different perspectives.  To support your research you will need to search different databases to find journal and newspaper articles.

Finding Citations
This guide highlights the primary Library databases where you can find articles to support your research. However, depending on your approach to your research topic, there may be other databases that would also be useful.

Finding Articles Once You Have a Citation
Once you find the citations you'll need to find the actual articles.  This guide provides general tips for finding articles from a citation.

If you have questions, the database isn't providing any abstracts, you can't find any articles, or are having problems understanding your citation, contact Steve Stich, Librarian for Civil Engineering.

Engineering
Aspects

One of the most comprehensive engineering database available.  Covers all aspects of engineering from 1884 to current articles.

Abstracts with links to full text.

Great multidisciplinary database, especially good for current structures.

Why you want to use it for this paper - because it has the full text of ENR: Engineering News Record, one of the top trade journals of the construction industry.  Abstracts from 1993 and full text begins with April 2001 issues.

Architectural Aspects

This database offers a comprehensive listing of journal articles published worldwide on architecture and design, archaeology, city planning, interior design, and historic preservation.

Abstracts only. Covers journals from 1930 forward with select titles back to the 1860s.

Societal
Aspects

Finding information to describe how a structure effected the society around it is not always easy.  Good places to start looking for this type of information is in newspapers or local magazines.

Current newspaper articles can often be found using your favorite Internet search engine (Google, Yahoo, etc.). Historical newspaper articles are less easy to find. The Library has historical indexes to the New York Times, Washington Post, London Times and other newspapers.  Link to list of Library electronic newspapers.

Note: Baltimore Sun - the Library's index to the Sun only goes back to 1990.  To find information on older Baltimore buildings I suggest going to the Enoch Pratt Library or the Maryland Historical Society Library.  Both are in the Mt. Vernon area and are accessible via the JHU Shuttle (Peabody stop).

Other information on Baltimore newspapers and Maryland archives.

For additional suggestions on databases to search contact Steve Stich, Civil Engineering Librarian.

Finding Articles Once You Have a Citation

Once you have found a citation from a database you then need to get the article if it is not full text in the database.

Tips for finding your article in MSE Library.

Finding Call Numbers in the MSE Library.

If the library does not own the journal you need we can get the article for you from another library.  Find out more information on Interlibrary Loan.  This service usually takes 5-10 business days, but there is no cost to you.
