American Geophysical Union Journals

The AGU introduced significant changes to its journals effective January

2002. Here are some important points to keep in mind as you seek access to articles in these journals.
  • AGU now regards the electronic version of each AGU journal as the version of record.
  • Articles are published on the Web first, followed by issuance in paper format.
  • Beginning in January 2002 articles will be identified by a Digital Object Identifier (DOI)
  • Ther have been changes in the print numbering system.
  • Using indexes to find articles.
  • What JHU has in print and electronic formats.

The DOI

The Digital Object Identifier (DOI®) is a system for identifying and exchanging intellectual property in the digital environment. It provides a framework for managing intellectual content, linking customers with content suppliers, facilitating electronic commerce, and enabling automated copyright management for all types of media. (http://www.doi.org)

All AGU articles will have a DOI. Each DOI is unique and is critical to retrieving and citing the article.

Here is an example of an article published in JGR in 2002:

Bos, B., and C. J. Speirs, Frictional-viscous flow of phyllosilicate-bearing fault rock: Microphysical model and implications for crustal strength profiles, J. Geophys. Res., 107(B2), 10.1029/2001JB000301, 2002.

In this citation the DOI is 10.1029/2001JB000301. The characters to the left of the slash (10.1029) are assigned by the DOI Foundation and identify the publisher (AGU). The characters to the right of the slash (2001JB000301) are assigned by AGU and specify the article.

Locating articles in the print versions
  • Beginning with the January 2002 issues, page numbers are consecutive within an article, not within an issue. This means each article begins with page 1.
  • Print issues continue to have date, volume and issue number printed on their covers.
  • Within an issue the articles are arranged by the editors not by the DOI.
  • To find an article in a print version it is necessary to consult the Table of Contents of the issue. It provides the layout numbers of the articles within the issue.
  • These layout numbers are not used in citations or bibliographic indexes. They are only for help in navigating the paper versions.

Examples:

Articles in JGR v. 107, n. B2 10 February 2002 have layout numbers like these:

 EPM 1-1 - EPM 1-18
        ECV 1-1 - ECV 2-13
        ECV 2-1 - ECV 2-14
        ESE 1-1 - ESE 1-14

Articles in JGR v. 107, n. C1 15 January 2002 (Oceans) have layout numbers like these:
        2 -1 - 2 -19
        6 -1 - 6 -12
        4 -1 - 4 -20

The first number is the order in which the article appears in this printed issue. The second number is the first or last page of that article.

Note: In Example 1 the location sequence is alpha, followed by numeric. In Example 2 the actual location order of articles is sequential, numbers 1- 8, but not necessarily the order given in the Table of Contents. It will be important for you to watch for variations on the sequences.

Indexes

In the print versions, two indexes that are helpful to consult at the back of each issue are:

  • Author index - use it to search by author; then find the layout number and DOI.
  • DOI index - use it to search by DOI; then find the layout number.
