Finding Scholarly Journals

Most of the print journals at the Milton S. Eisenhower Library are scholarly or academic. For access to additional scholarly journals on your topic, use the designated business article indexes online and look for the appropriate characteristics within the article or on the description page for the journal.  

Scholarly content is unavailable to the general public through the Internet for copyright reasons. The library subscribes to reputable web-based resources that provide it to you more efficiently. 

Characteristics of Scholarly Journals (i.e. Journal of Marketing):

• Contain lengthy articles, written by experts on a topic, for scholars or others in a field.
• Report original research.
• Undergo a peer review or screening process by experts in the field before publication (refereed).
• Provide bibliographies or references and contain footnotes.
• Usually published bimonthly (6x/year), quarterly (4x/year), or semi-annually (2x/year).
• Feature plain, straightforward covers, few photographs or ads
• Contain only illustrations (charts, graphs, statistics) that support the text

How do I limit to scholarly articles?

• Check the box marked "refereed" or "peer-reviewed" in the search screen. These options exist in the following databases:
  
  
  
  
  

• Always analyze articles or citation/abstracts for qualities of scholarly journals. Look for references, footnotes, frequency of publication, authorship, or empirical or theoretical research. Click on the link to the journal for more description.
  
  
• Try combining your search terms with and research, and case studies, or and statistics.
  
  
• Combine Classification Codes in ABI Inform Global with your search terms [e.g. and CC(9130) limits results to theoretical/experimental research].
  
  
• Look at the journal entries in the following periodical directories to verify if a journal is scholarly, refereed or peer-reviewed. To search for a certain journal, check the source lists for coverage within a database and limit by publication.
