This guide is intended to supplement the Research Guide for Business and list resources that will assist JHU students and faculty with academic research in international marketing. Please consult the Industry Guide and the Advertising Guide for additional information. The library subscribes to numerous resources that will facilitate your research. Using multiple resources will be necessary, depending on the particular country and data.
Available information will vary by country and depend on what that country requires, collects, or releases. The most recent, available data for certain regions or continents may be dated.
- Remote Access: Follow the remote access procedures to access library databases from home or laptop. Use your JHED login and password for authentication as a JHU user.
Bibliography Format: View examples from style guides, on our Citing Sources page, to determine what information you need to gather for a particular type of resource.
For MLA style, note Diana Hacker's examples in Section 31. Work from a service such as InfoTrac. If you retrieve full-text articles or data through a library's subscription service, you will need to include: - the name of the database
- name of the service
- name and location of the library
- date on which you retrieved that information
- URL of the service.

Use these resources to get a concise, reputable profile on your country that includes demographics, history, economy, political overview, government structure, infrastructure and other information. CIA The World Factbook (free web resource) Country profiles from the CIA include brief facts pertaining to geography, people, government, economy, communications, transportation, military and transnational issues.

| | Online library of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, which includes statistics and full-text publications pertaining to OECD countries.
| | Search World Development Indicators within or on CD-ROM in GPML for country-specific statistics and economic indicators.
| | Search abstracts or tables; abstracts target statistics from government and business publications, particularly industry-specific resources. Present document number to government staff for full report. U.S. information could include broader statistics or companies that do business in other countries.
| | Series of databanks containing current and historical, economic, industrial and financial statistics from around the world. Includes industry information and International Financial Statistics from IMF. CD-ROMS of the International Financial Statistics are available through the Government Publications library (GPML).

Government Publications librarians, on A-level, can assist in obtaining statistics, economic indicators, demographic data and available information released by the U.S. government or by the country.
Check the Official Publications of Foreign Countries to identify credible sources that a country provides.
Yearbooks, statistical abstracts and compendia from the country are important, official resources that may be available either in print or on microform in the library. Consult with business or government librarians. Latest editions of publications for selected countries also are available in the General Reference collection on M-level (HA call number range).

Survey of Current Business Full text monthly periodical containing current and historical economic indicators (Gross Domestic Product, income, consumer price indexes, production).
Perform an internet search for embassies, government agencies, departments of labor or commerce, and offices of official statistics for a country. They provide pertinent information to businesses seeking opportunities in those locations.
View Consumer Expenditure Surveys, Consumer Price Index, and other statistical resources for foreign countries, international business, economics, transporation, and other aspects through the page for Statistics

| | Mintel reports offer original, timely analysis and include data from reputable industry contacts and resources. They profile specific segments within the consumer goods and services industries. Reports include distribution, demographics/lifestyle information, market size and segmentation, trends and other categories. Coverage is heavily U.K. and U.S. focused, but other countries or regions are either represented in their own reports or mentioned in others. Mintel is accessible only by JHU faculty and students for academic research. In addition to VPN authentication, users must agree to Mintel's terms of use and set up an address. Personal accounts activate the customization capabilities.

| | | International and U.S. company and industry reports. Industry reports for broad sectors include North America, Asia Pacific and Europe.

ITA and U.S. Government Export Portal Free registration required to access market research reports, distribution channels, trade show information, key contacts and organizations, news, and other country-specific information.
The library has some Doing business in. . . publications for selected countries, which may offer some background information. Search in the JHU Catalog for country-specific resources owned by Johns Hopkins University. These "Doing Business in" publications are published irregularly. Use a web search engine (e.g. Google.com) to search for more current business information (i.e. patents, infrastructure, legal issues, taxation, regulation) for a particular country. Includes economic stability. | | Economist Intelligence Unit's risk services and World Investment Service help determine whether to do business abroad. Some industry information is covered in the economic assessments.
| | Assesses e-business readiness by country, includes hot topics, and "case studies" that profile initiatives and best practices.
| | Search for additional country-specific resources (e.g. Doing business in) in WorldCat, an international online catalog of materials owned by libraries, and borrow them for free from Interlibrary Services.
| | View the "Doing Business. . ." series of annual reports presenting quantitative indicators on the performance and enforcement of business regulations, which can be compared across more than 175 countries. Indicators are used to analyze outcomes and determine what reforms worked, where and why. Also see Country Tables section. Consult government librarians for additional World Bank resources.

Guide for International Company Research Bloomberg (designated terminal) : International and U.S. company profiles and news, industry information and basic country data from the Bloomberg Financial Service. Ask the business librarian for assistance. Downloading is not included; printing is available. (Access only by JHU faculty and students) Online article indexes provide more targeted, current information on companies, industries, regulations advertising, and business developments abroad. Market share, strategies, industry trends, new products and resources on the competition can be gleaned from articles, particularly in trade journals.
Entire articles may be available through the database or another library resource. Click on the FIND IT buttons by article citations to identify if another JHU resource can provide the article. If not, submit your article request to Interlibrary Services to obtain an electronic copy.

Perform several types of searches in the JHU library catalog for general books on international marketing. Click on the assigned subject headings within relevant records to browse for additional materials that have that same subject classification.
