Products, Brands, Marketing and Advertising Campaigns

Periodical and Newspaper Articles:

Explore several article indexes online for the most current information on new products, intended markets, mergers and acquisitions, and marketing or advertising campaigns.  Article databases, licensed to the university, index different scholarly journals (e.g. Journal of Product Innovation Management), trade journals (e.g. Progressive Grocer), and popular magazines (e.g. Fortune). Some may provide entire articles online for selected journals, depending on copyright agreements with the publishers.

Other Electronic Databases (JHU accounts only):

The following databases may provide information on specific products or categories of products within an industry. It is extremely difficult to find information at the brand level, but some reports are more detailed.

Websites (Freely available):

How Products Are Made

A resource from Gale which includes the inventor, manufacturing and assembly processes, the raw materials and more for particular types of products.

Merchandise Line Sales

Merchandise Line Sales is a component of the retail and trade sector report of the Economic Census.  Tables include "Merchandise Lines by Kind of Business for the United States" and "Kinds of Business by Broad Merchandise Line for the United States."

Thomas Register of Manufacturers

Requires free registration but is really useful for matching a brand with a company or determining what company manufactures a certain product. One can easily search by product or service, brand or company.

Additional Materials from the JHU Catalog:

Try an Advanced keyword search the JHU Catalog for additional print or electronic books and other materials for information on marketing, brands, companies, or products.

Various types of keyword searches (e.g. General, Title, Subject and Contents Notes) will enable you to retrieve a more complete list of materials.

Combine broad terms (e.g. marketing) with other terms (e.g. AND success, best, worst, mistakes or failures) to locate examples of successful or unsuccessful marketing campaigns or approaches.

Videos:

CLIO Advertising Awards--Perform an Advanced search by general keyword for Clio and set the limit by format option to videorecordings.

Other videorecordings in the collection pertain to advertising and marketing and may profile specific companies.  Faculty and students may view them in the Audio-visual center or at a SPSBE campus.
