Selected Biology Web Sites
This is a short list of authoritative sites dealing with different aspects of biology. More information on how to evaluate web sites is available. 


Government Web Sites

National Center for Biotechnology Information - This web site provides a wealth of information in several databases. There are literature databases like PubMed. There are many databases containing molecular information. The most famous of these is GenBank, the database of publicly available DNA sequences.

Centers for Disease Control - As part of the Department of Health and Human Services, the CDC deals with many aspects of public health. This web site provides both national and state statisics on many public health topics. The CDC also publishes several online titles including Emerging Infectious Diseases and MMWR: Morbidity and Mortality Report Weekly.

National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering - is part of the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Provides information on funding, databases, and other resources available for work in these fields.

Visible Human Project - provides anatomically detailed images of the normal male and female bodies. This project is sponsored by the U.S. National Library of Medicine, part of the National Institutes of Health.

Stem Cell Information - is the official site provided by the National Institutes of Health.


Genetics and Genomics

Human Genome Project Publications - This site provides access to a wide variety of publications about the human genome project.

GenBank Databases - This site gives you access to multiple databases of the NCBI.

123Genomics - is a collection of links to web sites dealing with genomics, proteomics, and bioinformatics.


Proteins and Proteomics

RSCB Protein Data Bank - provides several tools for finding information about proteins and their interactions. The Research Collaboratory for Stuctural Bioinformatics (RSCB) is a group of U.S. university research laboratories. 

Biomolecular Engineering Research Center - in Boston MA has several different tools and databases available on their web site. 

ExPASy Proteomics Server - is produced by the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics. Databases and modes are provided on this site.


Prokaryotes

The Prokaryotes - is an online textbook covering most things prokaryotic.
