Hamburger Endowed Friends Lecture Thursday, April 7 Peter Agre, will give a talk titled: "From Lake Wobegon to Stockholm: Personal Reflections." Peter Agre was born and raised in Northfield, Minnesota. His father was Chairman of the Chemistry Department at St. Olaf College and subsequently at Augsburg College. It was while attending medical school at Johns Hopkins (M.D. 1974) that Dr. Agre discovered a love for biomedical research. Following an Internal Medicine residency at Case Western Reserve and a Hematology/Oncology Fellowship at UNC Chapel Hill, Dr. Agre returned to Hopkins for a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Cell Biology. In 1984, Dr. Agre joined the faculty of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and rose through the ranks to become Professor of Biological Chemistry and Professor of Medicine. Dr. Agre's research led to the first known membrane defects in congenital hemolytic anemias (spherocytosis) and produced the first isolation of the Rh blood group antigens. In the early 1990s, Dr. Agre's lab became well known for discovering the aquaporin water channel proteins, launching a new area of biomedical research. Dr. Agre was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2000, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2003, and the American Philosophical Society in 2004. In 2003, he shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Roderick MacKinnon of Rockefeller University. Dr. Agre will leave Johns Hopkins in July 2005 to join the Duke University Medical Center as vice chancellor for science and technology.
