General Collections Conservation: located in room 108 of Krieger Hall The General Collections Conservation Unit is responsible for the care and maintenance of books and flat paper materials (essentially maps) from the Libraries' general (i.e., circulating) collections. The unit is staffed by a Conservator, and a cadre of student assistants. The unit performs primarily minor conservation treatments (i.e., repairs requiring less than two hours), such as recasing, spine repair, shrinkwrapping, mending and tipping-in loose or detached pages, textblock consolidation, polyester film encapsulation, and spray deacidification. The Collections Conservator reviews materials after use, determines which items receive treatment, and indicates the type of treatment each item will receive. This position also treats items designated as Medium Rare, a class of largely nineteenth-century books with illustrated covers and plates which librarians have judged to have artifactual value.
