British Book Artist Teaches the Art of Fore-edge Painting

Photo of book with fore-edge painting

On April 8 and 9, 2005 the Johns Hopkins University Sheridan Libraries sponsored, The Curious Art of Fore-Edge Painting, presented by book artist Martin Frost at the Milton S. Eisenhower Library in Baltimore, Maryland.  Designed to appeal to both painters and book workers (conservators, binders, book artists and crafts people) of all levels, the program  included an illustrated lecture and a one-day hands-on workshop.

Members of the Baltimore bibliophiles, Rare book dealers, Friends of the Johns Hopkins University Library, librarians and conservators attended the lecture, which describe the genesis and progress of this little known art form and featured painted books from the artist's own collection. The workshop, presented the day after the lecture, focused on the techniques of English water coloring onto book-edges. Workshop participants included book artist, book conservators, and artists.

 About the Artist:
During the last 35 years the British book artist Martin Frost has painted over 3,000 book-edges including many examples of the more unusual two-way, split and all-edge paintings.  His work is to be found in national and private collections as well as in institutions worldwide.  Frost currently teaches the art in England.

Below are pictures of the paintings created during the workshop.
