Adopt-A-Conservation Treatment

Conservation of Charles Dickens’ Bleak House (London, Bradbury and Evans, [1852-53]).

Garrett Library PR 4556 .A1 1852 Octavo, original blue pictorial wrappers; custom box.

This First Edition consists of 20 monthly parts (bound as 19) in their original printed and illustrated blue paper wrappers.  Prior to treatment, the wrappers had been stab sewn and some sections had come loose from their sewing.  Some of the wrappers were also torn. The item had been temporarily housed with cardstock and string. More importantly, because of the differences in the way the images and text were printed, there was major staining on the plates.

Conservation included disassembly of each volume, washing, and deacidification of all pages. Image pages with staining were bleached to reduce staining and to match color of other text pages.  All issues were resewn into their paper wrappers, tears mended and the entire item placed into a custom box.
