Sakai at Johns Hopkins

The Sakai Project is a $6.8M community source software development project founded by the University of Michigan, Indiana University, MIT, Stanford, the uPortal Consortium, and the Open Knowledge Initiative (OKI) with the support of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Sakai is based on many of the principles of open source development efforts, but community source efforts rely more explicitly on defined roles, responsibilities, and funded commitments by community members than some open source development models. The project is producing open source Collaboration and Learning Environment (CLE) software, with first releases in 2004. The Sakai Educational Partners' Program (SEPP) extends this community source project to other academic institutions around the world, including The Johns Hopkins University, and is supported by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and SEPP member contributions.

The Sakai pilot test was developed during Fall 2004 and conducted during Spring 2005 and 2006.  A number of faculty members from various schools, including the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences (KSAS), the Whiting School of Engineering (WSE), Engineering Programs for Professionals (EPP) and the School of Professional Studies in Business and Education (SPSBE), are using Sakai for course management throughout the Spring pilot.  For these pilot courses, the user support teams include Theron Feist (Center for Educational Resources), Brenda Knox (EPP), and Pam Stefanuca (Center for Educational Resources), and the technical team includes Tim DiLauro (DKC), Ian Goh (IT@JH) and Elliot Metsger (Library Systems).
