Series Description SERIES 1: CORRESPONDENCE (Boxes 1-6)
The correspondence of mostly personal and some professional letters dates from 1891-1948, and comprises more than half of the collection. A large part of this correspondence is not of a scholarly nature. There is a voluminous correspondence from various family members in Germany and England, and many of these letter present a vivid picture of everyday life in Germany before and after World War I. (See letters from the following families: Friederichs, Gunter, Hechtenberg, Kauffmann, Laufs, Thedens and Totzke). The First World War was a time of some financial reverses for Klara Collitz and her husband. The comfortable pre-war income which she had enjoyed from investments in Germany dwindled drastically. At the same time increasing anti-German sentiment in the United States led to a decline of interest in German and German Studies, which adversely affected their professional earnings. These lean years for the Collitzes and their families in Europe are described in the correspondence. The more scholarly portion of the correspondence related to Klara Hechtenberg Collitz's philological studies and her prolific writings on a variety of subjects. The letters are arranged alphabetically by author of letter. SERIES 2: PERSONAL (Boxes 7 and 8) This series contains biographic material, letters of recommendation, correspondence with Ostbank, Berlin regarding Klara Collitz's dwindling accounts, photographs, invitations, travel brochures, bills and receipts, royalty statements, advertisements of local theatrical and musical performances, notices from clubs, Bryn Mawr College, Johns Hopkins University, Oxford University, American Philological Association, Modern Language Association, and Propaganda pamphlets of World War I. This material is arranged alphabetically by subject. SERIES 3: WRITINGS (Box 9) In this series there are reprints of articles by Klara Hechtenberg Collitz; a gallery proof of an article entitled "Boost"; manuscript notes; drafts and typescripts. These writings are arranged alphabetically by title. SERIES 4: NOTEBOOKS (Box 10)
These notebooks contain manuscript notes, mostly undated, on Old High German, Middle High German, German Literature, Hildbrandslied. One notebook contains notes taken from Prof. Johannes Hoops' lectures in 1900. SERIES 5: DIARIES (Box 11) The diaries contain few details and are dated 1912, 1919, 1925, 1928, 1929 and 1930. There is a ledger of 1919 in which Klara Collitz has copied articles from various newspapers dealing primarily with political subjects. An album or commonplace book with entries dated 1882- 1904 has signatures and messages from school friends, sketches, mementos and verses.
