Hubble Space Telescope Collection #7 Introduction
The Space Telescope Collection is a group of records compiled by Robert W. Smith while researching and writing his book The Space Telescope: A Study of NASA, Science, Technology and Politics. The material in this collection spans the years 1952 to 1991, but most of the records are concentrated in the 1970s and 1980s. The collection contains correspondence files, scientific plans, reports, publications, administrative records and subject files from various NASA centers, universities, research groups and contractors who were active in the development of the Hubble Space Telescope and the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI). Because this record group is an artificial collection dealing with the development of the Space Telescope Project, the documents it contains have been gathered form a variety of sources. The records do not provide complete documentation of either the Space Telescope or the agencies who contributed to its development. Additional materials from Robert Smith’s collection were also transferred to the National Air and Space Museum Archives and the Smithsonian Institute Archives. The collection is divided into nine series: Series 1: Goddard Space Flight Center, 1962-1985 Series 2: Marshall Space Flight Center, 1965-1986 Series 3: Robert O’Dell Files, 1972-1984 Series 4: Large Space Telescope, 1972-1978 Series 5: Meeting Minutes, 1967-1987 Subseries 1: Large Space Telescope Operations and Management Working Group Meetings, 1973-1976 Subseries 2: Space Telescope Science Working Group Meetings, 1977-1987 Subseries 3: Miscellaneous Meetings, 1968-1986 Series 6: Spectrographs/Photometer/Cameras, 1976-1985 Series 7: Space Telescope History Project Resource Files, 1952-1989 Series 8: Space Telescope Science Institute Working Files, 1958-1991 Series 9: Reports, Proposals, Plans, Manuals, 1970-1987 Accession Number: 98.25 Provenance: Twenty-four boxes of material were transferred to the Archives by Robert W. Smith Size: 17 cubic feet (16 record center boxes, 1 document case, and 1 oversize flat box) Citation: The Ferdinand Hamburger Archives of The Johns Hopkins University, Collection #7, The Hubble Space Telescope, series number and title, file title and inclusive dates. History Robert W. Smith compiled the Space Telescope Collection while writing his book The Space Telescope: A Study of NASA, Science, Technology and Politics. The book, published in 1989, was one of the main goals of the Space Telescope History Project (STHP). STHP was the result of the efforts of historians from the Johns Hopkins University and the National Air and Space Museum. The project was partially funded by NASA and the National Science Foundation and in the 1980s it was housed in STScI on the Johns Hopkins University’s Homewood Campus. The purpose of the project was to provide a history of the Space Telescope Project from its origins to the time when the telescope was placed in orbit. The project also developed a large body of historical resource files and oral history tapes. The oral histories and many of the files are housed at the National Air and Space Museum. The Space Telescope Collection is a portion of these working resource files. The Hubble Space Telescope was the product of collaboration between NASA and the US government, private industry, and the academic world. Unlike telescopes on earth, which are less effective due to the light from civilizations, the Space Telescope allows astronomers to gather very accurate and detailed data. A telescope of this type was needed by astronomers, physicists and space science researchers. However, with so many diverse organizations contributing to the telescope’s development, a central location became necessary to coordinate and manage the overall project. For this reason, STScI was established in 1981. The final location, the Steven Muller Building of the Johns Hopkins University, was selected after a series of proposals and presentations to AURA, the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy. The AURA consortium was responsible for running STScI. The Space Telescope Science Institute, previously housed in the Johns Hopkins University’s Rowland Hall, moved into its new location in 1982. The design and construction of the Space Telescope and its components continued under its direction throughout the 1980s. In April, 1990, the completed Hubble Space Telescope was launched aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery, and put into orbit. The telescope remains in orbit, transmitting data to astronomers and researchers on a daily basis. Series Description Series 1, Goddard Space Flight Center, 1962-1985, contains records dealing with the Goddard Space Flight Center’s role in the development of the Hubble Space Telescope. The files in this series are arranged alphabetically by subject title. The bulk of this series deals with administrative issues and includes correspondence, project directive studies, reviews and plans. The majority of the records are from the 1960s and 1970s, and deal with the early development of the project. Series 2, Marshall Space Flight Center, 1965-1986, deals with the Marshall Space Flight Center’s work in the development of the Space Telescope. The files in this series are arranged alphabetically by subject. The records consist of correspondence, reports, memos, briefings, and the Project Manager’s information files. Series 3, O’Dell Files, 1972-1984, consists of files created by Dr. Robert O’Dell while serving as the Space Telescope’s Project Scientist. The files are arranged alphabetically by subject. Dr O’Dell’s daily notes from 1972-1984 are included in this series, but the years 1975-1977 are missing. This records group also includes administrative and budget records, as well as correspondence, reports, proposals and memos. Series 4, Large Space Telescope, 1972-1978, is arranged chronologically. These records document the overall development of the Large Space Telescope Project and have been gathered from various institutions, most of them NASA centers. Files include science and technology proposals, plans, presentations, project reviews, and budget records. The majority of these records deal with potential contractors who would be creating equipment and instruments to be used on the Space Telescope. Series 5, Meeting Minutes, 1967-1987, is arranged chronologically. The files consist of meeting minutes from various groups working on the Space Telescope project. The largest group of files is the Subseries 2, minutes of the Space Telescope Science Working Group meetings 1 - 38. The minutes from meetings 25 and 26 are missing. The second largest group of files, Subseries 1, includes the minutes of the Large Space Telescope Operations and Management Working Group meetings. These files run from 1973 to 1976. The remainder, Subseries 3, is miscellaneous and incomplete meeting minutes, including those of STOPAT, the Space Telescope Observatory Performance and Assessment Team, and the Space Telescope Flight Design Operations Review. Series 6, Spectrographs/Photometer/Cameras, 1976-1985, is arranged alphabetically by subject. The files in this series deal with scientific instruments which were to be used on the Space Telescope, and include reports, proposals, plans, correspondence and reviews. The Faint Object Spectrograph and Camera are mentioned, as well as the High Resolution Spectrograph, the High Speed Photometer, and the Wide Field Camera. Series 7, Space Telescope History Project Resource Files, 1952-1989, is arranged alphabetically by author or subject. These records deal with a wide range of subjects, including the history of telescope use in astronomy and the need for an orbiting telescope. The files consist of copies of published articles and some correspondence written by scientists, astronomers, physicists, and research groups. Large files on M. Aucremaune, R.C. Bless, Garvin Emanual, J.D. Rosendhal, and Lyman Spitzer, Jr. contain correspondence and reports, while most of the other files contain published articles and reports. Series 8, Space Telescope Science Institute Working Files, 1958-1991, is arranged alphabetically by subject. These files were created by the Space Telescope Science Institute and the majority of them are from the 1980s. The few early files included were kept for reference purposes. The records in this series include correspondence between the Space Telescope Science Institute, NASA and the contractors working on the telescope, as well as newsletters, reports, project reviews, plans ans published brochures and booklets. Series 9, Reports, Proposals, Plans, Manuals, 1970-1987, is arranged chronologically. This series consists of published reports, plans, proposals and scientific manuals. The majority of these documents deal with the instrument systems to be used in the Space Telescope, while the business management proposals also make up a large portion of the records.
