Dissertations submitted to The Johns Hopkins University are microfilmed by UMI Dissertation Services. UMI allows authors to claim a five year restriction period, during which access to a restricted dissertation requires the author's permission. This applies to the paper copy, the microfilm copy, and any addenda in other media. The purpose of this restriction is to allow an author who wishes to publish his/her dissertation a period of exclusivity. The author can revise, update, or expand his/her work during this period without fear that someone else might view what amounts to a rough draft. Another motivation for an author to request a restriction involves patent applications. If a dissertation describes a process or product that the author wishes to patent, he/she would wish to conceal this information from others who might profit from the author's research before protection is obtained. For these reasons a dissertation that is cataloged and listed in a bibliographic database may not be available on request. Please understand that this restriction is claimed by the author and the University must comply with the terms of the restriction. If you have requested a dissertation and have been told that it is restricted you may write a letter to the author requesting access. Enclose your letter in a sealed, stamped envelope and place this envelope inside another envelope. Address the outer envelope to UMI Dissertation Services, 300 North Zeeb Road, P.O. Box 1346, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48106-1346. UMI will forward your letter to the author's last reported address. UMI will not divulge an author's address, nor can they guarantee that the author will respond. Upon the expiration of a restriction, the dissertation will be removed from the restricted list and will be made available under the same procedures that apply to other Hopkins dissertations. These procedures are described more fully on the page you came from. If you have any questions concerning thispolicy, please contact the Archivist. |
