Using the Index to Selected City Streets and Enumeration Districts to Locate Addresses for Baltimore City

In order to find information about persons included in the 1930 census, it is necessary to locate his/her address in Baltimore City. Locating the address in this index will let you know which microfilm roll contains the census information you need.

  1. Insert the microfilm M-1931 (National Archives and Records Administration 1985) into the machine and fast-forward to Maryland, which is at the end of the film. The film also includes Illinois, Indiana, and Kansas.
  2. Look for the street where the person lived. The streets, avenues, parks, and boulevards are in alphabetic order and the numbered streets are behind them. There are 394 pages of street names for Baltimore.
  3. Locate the block ranges. For example, 918 Preston St. is within the range 900-1600, after which an E.D. number can be found. Here is an example

    Preston ST (900-1600) 4-432

  4. Write down the E.D that is provided. In this example, the E.D number is 4-432.
  5. You will then need to find out which census microfilm roll contains the records for ED 4-432. To obtain this information:
    • Go to the website: http://1930census.archives.gov
    • Click "continue."
    • On the next page on the left side of the screen there is a menu of States. Scroll down to Maryland and then click "continue."
    • Go to the section "SEARCH ENUMERATION DISTRICTS (E.D)" at the bottom of the next page. Input your E.D number and click "continue." You will get the roll number of the census microfilm.
  6. On this census microfilm, find your E.D number, under which there are many addresses that make up an enumeration district. Make sure you start from sheet number 1 so that you do not miss any addresses under your ED number. Find the address you are looking for and then print the page.
