ArcGIS Site License Program
"Computer Mapping at your Desktop"

Fact Sheet

What is ArcGIS?
ArcGIS is a powerful desktop mapping program that enables users to analyze geospatial data and create their own custom designed maps. A popular use of ArcGIS has been to map the wide variety of demographic information available from the decennial census.  Users can also supply their own data or make use of the many datasets available from the Government Publications/Maps/Law Library (GPML).  See ArcGIS Data.

What is the ArcGIS site license program?
Previously ArcGIS software was only available for use in the Government Publications/Maps/Law Library.  With the site license program, we are now authorized to offer Johns Hopkins faculty, students and staff the opportunity to load a copy of the ArcGIS software on to any university-owned computer for their use in teaching, research or course work.

How does the program work?

  • No fees are involved for JHU faculty, students and staff.
  • Interested faculty, students, and staff should complete the ArcGIS Registration form.
  • Once approved for participation, faculty, students and staff can then check-out a copy of the ArcGIS software kit (software and data on CD-ROM) from the Government Publications/Maps/Law Library.
  • The circulation period for the CD-ROM software is two weeks.  Users interested in retaining a site license copy of the kit in their campus office can purchase a site license copy through the Government Publications/Maps/Law Library.  Cost is $250.00.  Software upgrades are not included.  Contact Jim Gillispie for details.

Software Extenstions
As part of our site license, a selected group of optional ArcGIS extensions are included with each ArcGIS kit.  These extensions add capabilities for raster analysis, 3D visualization, advanced map printing and so on.  We are currently licensed to provide the following extensions.

  • 3D Analyst
  • ArcPress
  • ArcScan
  • Geostatistical Analyst
  • Maplex
  • Publisher
  • Spatial Analyst
  • StreetMap
  • Survey Analyst
  • Tracking Analyst

Training
The library offers the following training options:

  • An easy way to begin learning ArcGIS is to work through the “Getting Started with ArcGIS” manual included with each site license ArcGIS kit.
  • Web based training is also available via the ESRI Virtual Campus.  For more details see ArcGIS Training via the Web.
  • Several times per year GPML Library staff in association with the Welch Medical Library offer introductory ArcGIS training.  Class offerings and registration information can be found at http://www.welch.jhu.edu/classes/index.cfm.  Look under the Free Classes heading.
  • GPML staff are also available as guest lecturers for Johns Hopkins classes.  We will tailor ArcGIS training to your group’s specific needs and interest. Call the GPML library for further details (410-516-8360).

Technical Support
Our ArcGIS site license requires that any telephone technical support requests made to ESRI Inc. be channeled through selected staff in the Government Publications/Maps/Law Library (410-516-8360) ask for Bonni or Jim.   Users that call ESRI directly may be referred to Bonni or Jim.

Recommended Hardware & Software for ArcGIS 9.x
ESRI Inc. recommends the following configuration for optimal performance using a PC:

  • Pentium 4 or Xeon Processor
  • DVD-Rom Drive for ArcView version 9.2 or higher
  • Processor speed 1.0 GHz or higher
