The Music Man of JHU

Conrad “Gebby” Gebelein, the beloved late music director who directed the university’s instrumental musical programs for nearly 50 years is the subject of a three-volume scrapbook recently donated to the Sheridan Libraries.  Newspaper articles, photographs, concert programs, and letters capture Gebby’s spirit during his illustrious career at Johns Hopkins that began in 1921.  Upon his retirement in 1971, he was named conductor emeritus by then president Milton S. Eisenhower.

An ardent lacrosse fan, the Bavarian-born Gebelein led fans in fight songs, and would strike up the band to play “Ach du Lieber, Augustine” whenever the Hopkins team reached 20 goals in a game.  Gebelein also led the glee club, and conducted classical music concerts at Shriver Hall.

Lenore Fine, an alumna and friend of Gebelein compiled the scrapbooks with the assistance of Gina Lacy Wilt.  They are available in the Eisenhower Library Special Collections Department.  For more information, please call 410.516.8348.  Gebelein is also the subject of an article in the May 2, 2005 issue of The Gazette
