The Dr. Elliott and Eileen Hinkes Collection of Books of Scientific Discovery
 (Spring '12)
Eureka! is on view through February 29, 2012 at the George Peabody Gallery.  This collection of approximately 300 rare books reveals and illustrates most of the major milestones in the history of ancient and modern scientific discovery.

Copyright and Fair Use (Fall '11)
With the increasing use of images, music, and other kinds of audio-visual resources as well as the delivery of course content through online course management systems like Blackboard, scholars and academic institutions are facing challenges as to what constitutes fair use and what does not. Therefore, the aim of this workshop is to create awareness about some of the challenges related to copyright and provide an electronic toolkit for the participants.

Library to Expand at Homewood (Fall '08)
After four years of planning and study encompassing input from faculty, students and staff, the university's board of trustees announced that they are set to forge ahead with plans to construct the Brody Learning Commons adjacent to the existing Milton S. Eisenhower Library. 

Hopkins Biomed Experts (Fall '08)
Hopkins Biomed Experts is a tool that allows users, internal and external, to identify JHU faculty biomedical experts based on their published output indexed in PubMed. Collexis facilitates faculty research and project collaboration.

Special Collections Materials on Display (Fall '08)
Each year the Friends of the Johns Hopkins Libraries generously designate 20 percent of member contributions to fund the purchase of special collections materials.  This year, 12 items were purchased, and selected titles are now on display in the central corridor on M-Level.

Exhibit Showcases Decorative Bookbindings (Fall '08)
Bound to Please, an exhibit of more than 60 beautifully bound and tooled books from the late 17th to the mid-20th century, explores the art of book finishing, from simple adornments on vellum to exquisite gilt-tooled leather bindings.

Johns Hopkins Awards Student Book Collectors (Spring '08)
Six prizes have been awarded in the 2008 Betty and Edgar Sweren Student Book Collecting Contest.  Begun in 1993 by the Friends and endowed this year by long-time Friends Betty and Edgar Sweren, the contest recognizes the love of books and the delight in shaping a thoughtful and focused book collection.

An exhibition celebrating the birth 500 years ago of one of history's most famous architects.  Part of the Baltimore Festival of Maps, the exhibit traces Palladio's lasting legacy in building design down through the centuries.

DPAAP Begins Digging (Spring '08)
Five student interns have begun uncovering and describing the contents of The Afro-American Newspapers archives.  The 116-year-old Baltimore-based newspaper is the longest running family-owned African-American newspaper in the nation.

Friends of the Library Recent Acquisitions (Spring '08)

Grant Will Provide Access to Afro-American Archives (Summer '07)
A $476,000 award from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation will enable the Libraries and the JHU’s Center for Africana Studies to open the Afro-American Newspapers' archives for access by scholars and others.

Shakespeare Folios Displayed at Evergreen Museum (Summer '07)
A selection of folios and quartos from the John Work Garrett Library will be among the rare items featured on Thursday, July 5, at the Evergreen Museum & Library.

Eyre Apparent Exhibition Opens at George Peabody Library (Summer '07)
This exhibition celebrates the enduring popularity of Charlotte Brontë’s most famous novel, Jane Eyre. A favorite with Victorian readers  and of Queen Victoria herself), Jane Eyre became a staple of the school curriculum and remains a cornerstone of the English literary canon today.

Stephen Dixon: Endings (Summer '07)
Manuscripts, books, letters, and artifacts are among the items featured in this display celebrating the distinguished career of Writing Seminars’ professor Stephen Dixon.

The Magic Object: Prosperity and Protection in Antiquity (Spring '07)
Artifacts from the Johns Hopkins Archaeological Collection are featured in an upcoming Eisenhower Library exhibition curated and installed by students in a museum studies class. Amulets, seals, and images of guardian beings are among the items showcased.

ACRL National Conference  (Spring '07)
March 29 - April 1, 2007
The Sheridan Libraries join the Baltimore library community in welcoming librarians and leaders in higher education to the 13th national Association of College and Research Libraries conference in Charm City.  National leaders will discuss issues such as interactive gaming and social networking technology in libraries.

The History of African Americans at Johns Hopkins University (Spring '07)
A unique collaborative effort to document the contributions of African Americans to Hopkins engages students as researchers and oral historians

H.L. Mencken Exhibit Extended through February 11 (Spring '07)
The exhibition of “Yet Another One!  H.L. Mencken,” which opened in September at the George Peabody Library Exhibition Gallery, has been extended.  Originally scheduled to close January 7, it may now be viewed through February 11.

On Sunday, Nov. 19, at 3:30 p.m., Mencken scholar David S. Thaler will present an illustrated lecture at the George Peabody Library exploring the issues associated with the persistent assertion that Mencken was anti-Semitic. 

Award to Preserve Massive Cosmic Images Online (Fall '06)
The Sheridan Libraries have been awarded a $185,000 grant from the
Institute of Museum and Library Services to create a prototype system
that will capture and preserve the massive digital datasets generated
for the Virtual Observatory.

Johns Hopkins Libraries at the Baltimore Book Festival (Fall '06)

Live from Baltimore—The Johns Hopkins Science Review (Spring '05)
Did you know that Hopkins produced four nationally-broadcast television programs targeted toward a prime-time, popular audience?  Between 1948 and 1960, the university developed weekly programs that explored topics in medicine, history, drama, politics, astronomy, literature, philosophy, biology, art, oceanography, psychology, music, education, and American life in general, through the prism of the 1950s.  These vintage programs are now available for viewing.
