An Afternoon of Art and Architecture at the Peabody Library
During the Baltimore Book Festival

Join local authors Martha Frick Symington Sanger and Christopher Weeks at the at the George Peabody Library Antiquarian Book Fair on September 25, 1999. This Book and Author Series is sponsored by the Friends of the Johns Hopkins Libraries. The George Peabody Library is located at 17 East Mount Vernon Place.

Martha Frick Symington Sanger will be present her book, Henry Clay Frick: An Intimate Portrait at 3:30 p.m. Sanger, the great-granddaughter of Henry Clay Frick, gives a personal and revealing account of one of the titans of 19th century America industry and the emotional events that shaped one of the world's finest private collections. This rags to riches story is both stunning and compelling. Drawing on ten years of research, including hundreds of interviews, and with unprecedented access to private family diaries, personal letters, reminiscences and photographs, Sanger lifts the shroud of secrecy that has previously guarded Frick's life. Sanger looks not only at his business career, but his family life, his development as an art collector, and the psychological legacy he left to his children. In her presentation, Sanger will reveal the man behind the collection.

At 5:00 p.m., Baltimore's own Christopher Weeks will introduce his latest book, Perfectly Delightful: The Life and Gardens of Harvey Ladew. In this biography, Weeks introduces us to the creator of the Ladew Topiary Gardens, the lavishly wealthy Harvey Ladew who surrounded himself with fine art, good living, and the most amazing people. In the piles of memoirs, letters and photos Ladew left behind, Weeks was able to show the parallels in Ladew's carefree, optimistic, and leisurely attitude toward life with the design and personal attention he gave to his garden. Weeks will lead us on a personal tour of the life and gardens of Ladew.

A book signing and reception for both authors will begin at 4:15 p.m. The George Peabody Antiquarian Book Fair is held in conjunction with the Baltimore Book Festival, September 25-26 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Peabody Book Fair will include antiquarian book dealers, live chamber music performances, and an exhibition honoring George Washington and the bicentennial of his death throughout the weekend. In addition to the other activities, on Saturday, September 25, there will be free book appraisals from 12-4 p.m., and a live broadcast of the nationally acclaimed radio program the "Book Guys" from 1 p.m to 3 p.m . Admission to the Peabody Library and the events are free and open to the public.
