A TRIBUTE TO GEORGE WASHINGTON,
AN EXHIBIT AT PEABODY

Celebrating the life and legacy of the nation's first president, the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association and the George Peabody Library present an exhibit, A Tribute to George Washington. This exhibition, which marks the bicentennial year of Washington's death, will be on display at the George Peabody Library of the Johns Hopkins University from Monday, August 9 through Thursday, Nov.18, 1999. The library is located at 17 Mount Vernon Place in Baltimore.

The exhibit will highlight Washington's expansive personal interests as well as historical public tributes to him following his death on Dec.14, 1799. It consists of approximately 50 objects drawn from Washington's Mount Vernon collections, along with loans from the George Peabody Library. This impressive collection of books, prints and photographs span topics like literature, farming, gardening, travel and history. It also includes a sample of rare books that also exist in Washington's personal library of over 900 volumes. Historical eulogies, engravings, images of Baltimore's elegant Washington monument and ten Washington biographies, considered by Washington scholars to be the most insightful, will be on display to depict the lasting legacy of this national hero.

In this bicentennial year of Washington's death, this exhibition was planned as part of this year's Baltimore Book Festival which will be dedicated to George Washington. The annual festival will be held from Friday, Sept. 24 through Sunday, Sept. 26 in Baltimore's Mt. Vernon around the Washington Monument. The Mount Vernon Ladies' Association has managed George Washington's home under a charter from the Commonwealth of Virginia, since 1858.

Admission to the Peabody Library and the exhibit is free, hours are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Mondays through Friday. The library will be open throughout the Baltimore Book Festival weekend, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The Sheridan Libraries encompass the Milton S. Eisenhower Library and its collections at the Hutzler Reading Room, Garrett Library and the George Peabody Library.
