| Home > About Us > News > Press Releases > press releases 1999 > National Book Award Recipient Reads at Hopkins April 4, 1998 NATIONAL BOOK AWARD RECIPIENT READS AT HOPKINS On Sunday, April 25 the Friends of the Johns Hopkins Libraries will host Alice McDermott as she reads and discusses her award winning novel Charming Billy. The program will begin at 1:00 p.m. in the Schafler Auditorium of the Bloomberg Center for Physics and Astronomy. Last November, a buzz was in the air at the National Book Awards. Alice McDermott, a visiting professor in the Writing Seminar at Johns Hopkins, walked away with the National Book award for fiction, defeating Tom Wolfe and three other contenders. McDermott won the award for her fourth novel, Charming Billy, a story of love, loss, and redemption for an Irish Catholic man and his family living in Queens, New York. McDermott has written three other novels, all acclaimed, A Bigamist's Daughter (1982); That Night (1987) which was nominated for a Pulitzer and for the National Book award; and At Weddings and Wakes (1992) which made her a Pulitzer finalist for the second time.
