April 30, 2002 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MEDIA CONTACT:Carolyn Smith (410) 659-8179 carolyn.smith@jhu.edu GEORGE PEABODY LIBRARY EXHIBIT FEATURES THE NORTHWEST PASSAGE AND FRANKLIN EXPEDITION In the summer of 1845, the British naval officer Sir John Franklin embarked on a mission to navigate a northwest passage, a sea route from the Atlantic to the Pacific through the Arctic. He commanded two ships and more than 130 men with provisions for three years. But by the end of the summer, all had vanished. Over the next few years, search missions embarked on voyages to find the lost Captain and his expedition and the story of the missing explorers captured the public imagination, spurring newspaper accounts, magazine articles, books and maps. The George Peabody Library has an exceptional collection of these materials now on display through the end of June 2002. The exhibit is free and open to the public. The George Peabody Library is located at 17 East Mount Vernon Place, and is open Monday-Friday from 9 a.m-3 p.m. For information, call 410-659-8179. The Sheridan Libraries encompass the Milton S. Eisenhower Library and its collections at the Hutzler Reading Room, Garrett Library and the George Peabody Library. ### Johns Hopkins University news releases can be found on the World Wide Web at: Headlines@Hopkins |
