JOHNS HOPKINS FRIENDS OF LIBRARIES
AWARD STUDENT BOOK COLLECTORS

The Sheridan Libraries Friends Advisory Council has awarded five prizes in this year's contest. Begun in 1993, the contest encourages student book collectors and helps students discover the enjoyment and intellectual stimulation that book collecting can bring. The competition includes two divisions, one each for graduate and undergraduate students.

Lucas Canino won first prize in the undergraduate category. A senior majoring in Near Eastern Studies, his collection is entitled "Philosophical and Mystical Thought in Judaism and Islam". First in the graduate category, went to Thomas R. Hunter a Ph.D. candidate in Political Science for his collection, The World of George Edmund Badger: Law and Politics in North Carolina, 1815-1861".

Tying for second place in the undergraduate category were senior Katherine K. Hill, an International Relations major for her entry, "My Path to Cairo in Books" and Basile Waite, a French major, for his collection "Chinese Characters".

Diana Thorburn, a Ph.D. candidate in International Relations and International Economics won second place in the graduate category for her collection, entitled "Reading Caribbean Women: Theory, Fact and Fiction".

Cash prizes were awarded to each winner. First prize in each division is $1,000 and second place prize is $500. In addition, the five winners were invited to present portions of their collections in an exhibit at the Eisenhower Library, Special Collections and Archives, A Level from May through August 2000.

Book collecting contests have a long tradition at many universities including Harvard, Yale, and Princeton. The Friends, many of whom are collectors themselves, are eager to encourage student book collectors at Johns Hopkins. Through the contest, students come in contact with established book collectors and dealers. The Friends hope the contest will help students gain insight into the art and business of collecting.

The Sheridan Libraries encompass the Milton S. Eisenhower Library and its collections at the Hutzler Reading Room, Garrett Library and the George Peabody Library.
