JOHNS HOPKINS' SHERIDAN LIBRARIES AWARDED SEED FUNDING FROM HODSON TRUST TO CREATE INSTITUTE FOR EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES AND ADVANCEMENT

The Milton S. Eisenhower Library at Johns Hopkins University has been awarded $500,000 in initial funding for one year from the Hodson Trust to establish a research institute to develop innovative technologies that enhance scholarship. Conceived as a university-wide resource, the institute will provide facilities, personnel and expertise in the development and application of technologically-enhanced instructional models. The institute will be staffed by instructional designers and applications programmers who will work in teams to collaborate with faculty to develop and promote new applications of technology in teaching and research.

The institute will also conduct independently-funded research and development on faculty training methods and materials using new technologies in teaching, particularly electronically-enhanced teaching, for both on-site and distance education courses.

The Hodson Trust, settled by the family of Beneficial Corporation founder Colonel Clarence Hodson, has donated over $93 million to four Maryland colleges since 1920 for merit scholarships, research grants, technology improvements, building construction and library expansion. Other Maryland colleges receiving Hodson Trust gifts include Washington, Hood and St. John's colleges.

Since 1996, a portion of the Hodson Trust's gift to Hopkins has supported the Eisenhower Library's expanding digital initiatives. Beginning with an endowment for a competitively awarded graduate student assistantship in the Digital Knowledge Center, the library's research and development department, the Hodson Trust also recently endowed the Directorship of the Digital Knowledge Center. The start-up funding for the creation of the Educational Research Institute for Advancement in the Eisenhower Library affirms the Trust's commitment to advancing innovative information technology initiatives at Johns Hopkins.

The Sheridan Libraries encompass the Milton S. Eisenhower Library and its collections at the Hutzler Reading Room, Garrett Library and the George Peabody Library.
