Exhibition Brochure

An intriguing new view of writer and journalist H.L. Mencken is offered in this exhibition through Mencken’s personal and often humorous inscriptions in books, pamphlets and other gifts that he presented to friends and family.

The exhibition takes its title from the fact that Mencken sent so many of his books to some friends that he sometimes inscribed them, “Noch eins,” or in English, “Yet another one!”  Featured are a number of books inscribed to his colleague Paul Patterson, editor of the Sun, with which Mencken was associated as a columnist and editor for over forty years. Also on display will be letters never before exhibited, photographs and printed ephemera.

The exhibition is drawn from the Robert A. Wilson Collection of H. L. Mencken, a rich assemblage that includes Mencken publications, original letters and photographs inscribed by Mencken. A gift to the Johns Hopkins Sheridan Libraries in 2005 from alumnus and trustee Richard S. Frary (class of 1969) and his wife Irene, the collection is named in honor of fellow Mencken collector and Johns Hopkins alumnus Robert Wilson (class of 1943).
