Enjoy visiting the haunts of Mt. Vernon literary luminaries – the enigmatic Edgar Allen Poe, the curmudgeonly H. L. Mencken, hip-hop star Tupac Shakur, and more. Follow a lively map created especially for the tour by Baltimore’s favorite caricaturist, Tom Chalkey. Tours will gather at the George Peabody Library 15 minutes prior to the start.

Sponsored by the Maryland Humanities Council, the guided tours are open for the first 30 guests. Self-guided tours also available.  Visit the Maryland Humanities Council tent at the Book Festival for more information. All tours are free and open to the public.

Avant-garde, New, and Contemporary Music at the Peabody Library

Peabody graduate students Kyle Bennett and James Lowe are the featured performers in two free concerts on Friday, September 26 and Sunday, September 28 at the Peabody Library. A second year master’s student, Bennett is studying computer music with Geoffrey Wright.  Lowe is also a second year master’s student and is studying guitar with Julian Gray.

Bennett and Lowe will be joined by musicians from the Ligetisplit Ensemble, a group they founded in 2008, which is dedicated to the pursuit of the avant-garde. The concerts will include a mixture of live acoustical instruments, amplified instruments, and electronic media. The program features a work by Gyorge Ligeti for 100 metronomes and a John Cage work for 12 radios. Works by Paul Hindemith, Andrew Imbrie, Elliott Carter, and Bennett and Lowe will also be featured.

Friday’s concert begins at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday’s concert begins at 2 p.m. For more information, call the Peabody Library Events office at 410.659.8197.
