Who We Are: The Facts

The Sheridan Libraries* encompass the Milton S. Eisenhower Library and its collections at the John Work Garrett Library, the George Peabody Library, the Albert D. Hutzler Reading Room,  and the Montgomery County and Washington, D.C. regional sites.  Together they provide the major research library resources for the university, serving Hopkins academic programs worldwide.

The Eisenhower Library is the university’s principal research library and the largest in the Hopkins library network, which includes specialized facilities and collections in medicine, public health, music, international affairs, and earth and space science.  In addition to more than 3.7 million books, the libraries provide 24/7 access to a rich collection of electronic resources, including over 171,000 print and e-journals, and more than 900,000 e-books.

Included in the Libraries’ special collections are rare books, manuscripts, digital collections, and archival materials. The library’s materials and services reflect the development and increasing diversification of resources used for teaching, research, and scholarship. Librarians with subject expertise serve as liaisons to the academic departments, build electronic and print collections, and provide research consultation and instructional services to meet the teaching and research needs of the university.

Librarians, information technology specialists, scientists, engineers, and faculty  work with emerging technologies in the Libraries’ digital program to enrich access to print and digital collections, advance innovative teaching strategies and integrate library resources in teaching, and to provide customer-focused services that support teaching and research.

The Libraries’ success is due in large measure to the invaluable support of its generous donors.  Thanks to friends, alumni, faculty, parents, corporations and foundations, at the conclusion of Johns Hopkins eight-year Knowledge for the World campaign in December 2008, the Libraries reached their $50M campaign goal.  One of the most important outcomes of the campaign is funding for the Brody Learning Commons.  Designed to foster collaborative learning and advance the academic excellence for which the university is renowned, this light-filled new space is being built adjacent to the Eisenhower Library, and is slated to open in 2012.
